Technical Support and Advisors

Last reviewed: August 2026

When operating in the cloud, you may need vendor technical support for incidents, architecture questions, or cost optimization advice. Support generally comes through two paths: direct CSP (cloud vendor) support and MSP (partner) support.

All vendors offer paid plans in addition to free basic support, and response time, support scope, and dedicated staff (TAM) assignment vary by plan.

Vendor Plan tiers Notes
AWS Basic → Business Support+ → Enterprise → Unified Operations New tier structure effective January 2027
Azure Basic → Developer → Standard → Professional Direct → Unified
Google Cloud Basic → Standard → Enhanced → Premium
OCI Basic → Paid (Premier) Premier includes a dedicated CSM

If you run production workloads, a paid plan is recommended. Response times during incidents differ significantly, and you also gain access to architecture reviews and cost optimization advice.

Higher-tier plans assign a dedicated Technical Account Manager (TAM). A TAM’s role goes beyond simple incident response — they continuously support the organization’s overall cloud operations.

What a TAM does:

  • Regular architecture reviews and improvement recommendations
  • Cost optimization analysis and commitment strategy advice
  • Internal escalation and priority response during incidents
  • Sharing the vendor’s internal roadmap and supporting adoption of new services
  • Operational maturity assessments and Well-Architected reviews
Vendor Plan with TAM Title
AWS Enterprise / Unified Operations Technical Account Manager
Azure Unified (formerly Premier) Designated Support Engineer
Google Cloud Premium Technical Account Manager
OCI Premier Customer Success Manager (CSM)

The biggest difference between paid plans is the response time during incidents.

Severity Description AWS Business Support+ Azure Professional Direct Google Cloud Enhanced OCI Premier
Critical Production down < 15 min < 1 hour < 1 hour < 1 hour
Urgent Partial production impact < 4 hours < 4 hours < 4 hours < 2 hours
Normal Non-production impact < 12 hours < 8 hours < 8 hours < 6 hours
Low General questions < 24 hours < 24 hours < 24 hours < 24 hours

Each vendor offers a service that automatically analyzes your environment and recommends cost savings, security improvements, and performance optimizations.

Vendor Product Notes
AWS Trusted Advisor Checks cost, security, performance, fault tolerance, and service limits. Full checks require Business Support or higher
Azure Azure Advisor Recommendations for cost, security, reliability, operational excellence, and performance. Available on all plans
Google Cloud Recommender / Active Assist Recommendations for cost, security, performance, and management efficiency. Available on all plans
OCI Cloud Advisor Recommendations for cost optimization, security, and performance. Available on all tenancies

Checking these services regularly and applying their recommendations can improve both cost and security.

Item CSP (direct from vendor) MSP (partner)
Role Provides infrastructure + technical support Operates the customer’s environment on their behalf + consulting
Support scope Limited to vendor services Covers architecture design, operations, cost optimization, migration, and more
Cost Support plan fee (usage-based) See below

MSPs generally do not charge an additional margin on cloud usage fees. The CSP provides the partner with a reseller discount (base discount), and the MSP earns revenue from that discount. So from the customer’s perspective, paying through an MSP typically costs the same as or similar to paying the CSP directly.

Cases where additional costs arise:

  • Managed operations services — Operations on behalf of the customer such as 24/7 monitoring, incident response, and patch management
  • Consulting — Architecture design, migration planning, cost optimization projects
  • Security monitoring — SOC operations, incident response

What you can gain additionally through an MSP

Section titled “What you can gain additionally through an MSP”
  • Unified multicloud management (a single point of contact for AWS + Azure, etc.)
  • Local invoicing and local-currency payment
  • Cost reporting and FinOps consulting
  • Support for country-specific certifications and regulations (see country guides)

Even without a paid plan, you can get answers to technical questions through the community. Other users or vendor employees respond, and this is useful for general usage questions or troubleshooting. However, response time is not guaranteed, so it is not suitable for production incident response.

  • “A free plan is enough for incident response” — The Basic plan has no response time SLA. You could wait days for a production incident.
  • “A support plan alone solves every problem” — CSP support is limited to that vendor’s own services. Architecture design or operations on your behalf falls under MSP territory.
  • “Community answers can be used for production incident response” — The community does not guarantee response time. Production environments need a paid support plan.
  • Have you defined target response times by incident severity for production workloads, and selected a support plan that matches them?
  • Do you have a process to regularly review recommendations from advisor services (Trusted Advisor, Azure Advisor, etc.)?
  • Have you evaluated whether you need an MSP (operations on your behalf, unified multicloud management, local-currency payment, etc.)?
